Active vs. Reactive: Which Side Are You On?

"There are only two types of people, active or reactive"

It's a simple idea that packs a big punch. It means some of us jump ahead, making things happen on our own terms (active), while others wait and respond to what life throws their way (reactive). And guess what? Most of us have played both roles at different times.

Let's dive into what this means for three groups of people we often work with at Mogressive: students, professionals, and veterans.

Understanding Active vs. Reactive:

  • Active People make the first move. They plan, initiate changes, and take charge of their destiny.

  • Reactive People wait to see what happens and then respond. They might feel like they're always one step behind, catching up rather than leading the way.

Why It Matters:

Your approach can shape your life, career, and relationships. Being active or reactive isn't just about what you do; it's about how you see the world and yourself in it.

Examples From Past Clients:

  • College Students: An active student seeks out opportunities for internships, joins clubs, asks questions in class, communicates with professors. They're building their future proactively. A reactive student, however, might only study the night before exams or join groups their friends choose, letting the college experience happen to them rather than shaping it.

  • Professionals: Consider a professional who networks in the workplace, learns new skills, and pitches innovative projects (active) versus one who only completes assigned tasks and hesitates to seek promotions (reactive). The active professional is more likely to climb the career ladder and find fulfillment.

  • Military Veterans: Transitioning back to civilian life, an active veteran might plan their career path, “finding a new mission”, use available resources, and connect with support groups. In contrast, a reactive veteran may struggle with change, waiting for opportunities to come to them rather than seeking them out.

Mogressive's Approach: "Active or reactive, and I'm guilty of playing both sides."

At Mogressive, we don't just acknowledge these two sides; we work with you to harness the power of being active in your life. Through our programs, we help you shift from reactive to active, taking control and making deliberate choices about your future.

I conducted a wellness assessment during week zero of the introductory portion and one question surveyed, shows when asked, “Do you feel in control of your life” the multiple question responses are “Yes & Sometimes”. Upon completion of one of our programs that mentality shifts and 97% of clients answer a reflection question, “Do you feel in control and understand how to take action in your personal life?” The majority checkbox “Yes! I feel 100% in charge of my life”

My programs are no joke, if you care about yourself and the people you love, try my 6 week awareness course. I recommend all prospective clients to start here. Once you learn the in’s, out’s, and why’s about yourself, it reveals the blueprints to creating a permanent solid foundation in your life– allowing you tackle life on your terms, proactively!

Benefits of Being Active:

  • Empowerment: Feel in charge of your life. People without goals work for people who do.

  • Opportunities: Open doors to new possibilities. The more prepared you are, the more opportunities present themselves your way.

  • Growth: Emerge yourself and the more you step out of your comfort zone, the quicker you’ll grow in all aspects of your life.

Shifting from Reactive to Active:

  1. Set Goals: Write down smallest/largest weekly tasks and reward yourself once you achieve them.

  2. Take Initiative: Don't wait for opportunities; create them. It takes :15 seconds to convince your mind to either “do it” or “not do it” your brain doesn’t know how to ask “why” whatever you say, think, or do is what your brain responds to.

  3. Stay Flexible: Be ready to adapt and adjust your plans as needed. Be stingy on your end goal (finish line) but be flexible on the road getting there.
